CUTS IN NEWSPRINT

SUPPLIES FROM CANADA AND NEWFOUNDLAND LONDON, May 24. The Newsprint Supply Company announced that Sir Stafford Cripps had indicated that newsprint imports from Canada and Newfoundland in 1949 may have to be cut to 30,000 or 50,000 lons The company said the imports permitted. for 1948 amounted to 100,000 tons. The announcement added that the company to-day interviewed Mr Harold Wilson, president of the Board of Trade, but he refused to anticipate a statement he would be making in the House of Commons on the newsprint situation, The Newsprint Supply Company emphasised that 1949 will be a vital year for British newspapers ordering newsprint from Canada and Newfoundland because contracts expire that year, and future contracts will be based on the quantity ordered in 1949.
