MEN’S HOCKEY

The conditions last Saturday were not at all favourable for hockey In North Otago, and it was easily seen that the players were unaccustomed to' heavy grounds. Rovers proved the better in their match against Oamaru in the Senior B Grade, and played an open attacking game from the start. The forwards proved more effective than their opposition, and Kennedy and Burden scored. Oamaru rallied in the second spell, and attacked strongly, but it was only the sound play of the Rovers goalie that prevented them from scoring. It was pleasing to note that a number of intermediate players filled positions in the Rovers side. In the only A Grade match played, Oamaru beat Kakanui by two goals to nil. Play was very even, and Oamaru played sound hockey to win, although one man short. Brown is playing at his best at present, and seems to suit the position at centre-forward. His fine stick work has been a feature of his play to date, and has been a factor in many of his side’s points this year. Tyson, the Kakanui goalie, played soundly, and saved many times during the game. L. Blair also played a good game for Oamaru in the goalie position. The Kakanui forwards played well, but were not able to finish off their movements in the same way as their opponents. Australian Tour The Australian team , will play Its first match in the South Island at Oamaru on Tuesday, August 3, before playing New Zealand at Dunedin on the following Saturday.
