MR CHIFLEY’S COMMENT

UTMOST FAITH IN MINISTER Rec. 11 p.m. CANBERRA,. May 24. “I have never had any doubt about the honesty.of the Minister,” said the Prime Minister, Mr Chifiey, commenting to-day on the charges made against the Minister of External Territories, Mr E. J. Ward, during the Garden trial. “ I do not believe the charges, and I never have. I keep a close eye upon the administration of all departments, and I know quite a bit about this thing. “ I think the judge made a very pertinent comment when he said: ‘Assuming that Ward had received a £SOOO bribe or done the other things we have heard about, is it likely he would take such action when this thing happened?’” Mr Chifiey added that the matter would be examined by the Attorneygeneral, Dr H. V. Evatt.
