LORNA LEIGH SUCCESSFUL

Special to the Daily Times CHRISTCHURCH, May 23. Double honours at the winter meeting of the South Canterbury Jockey Club were gained by Mestiza, who again outclassed her rivals in the South Canterbury Handicap yesterday, and Lisheen, who won the Craigmore Hack Steeplechase with something in reserve. Wintry conditions ruled, in marked contrast to the first day, and there were a number of surprises to add to the discomfiture of the spectators, who in spite of the rain, speculated to the tune of £34,073, compared with £30,899 10s on the second day last year. The total for the two days was £69,979 10s, an increase .of £14,448 on the sum of £55,531 10s handled last year. The adverse conditions for the South Canterbury Handicap did not worry Mestiza, who never left the rails throughout. She was in the middle of the field most of the way and D. F. Coombe, her promising young apprentice rider, worked her forward on the inside very smartly after passing the five furlongs, with the result that she headed the pacemaker, Clyde Bridge, immediately the straight was reached. The going close to the rails was heavy and Mestiza was aided when her rivals kept out on the firmer footing. Broie nearly as easily beat the others. This time he drifted to near the rear and was still there when the straight was reached, but he cut his rivals down very easily. Dark Arrow held a commanding position all the way and struggled on for third ahead of Verdant, who on this occasion was ridden in behind. Falconbridge, Prize Ring, and Royal Robe were the next to finish.

The details are as follows: PUKAKI HURDLES, Of £250. One mile and three-quarters. 6/6—Sedgemere, 9.3 (R. E. Page) '.. .. 1 2/I—Big Top, 10.1 (B. J. Langford) .. 2 3/3—Robert, 9.10 (S. Shaw) 3 Also started: 1/1 Pedantic, 4/4 Foreign Ways, 12/11 Tenorman, 8/7 Benbecula, 7/9 Siegform, 5/5 Young Bob, 11/10 Kosciusko, 10/12 Robot, 13/13 Petty Cash, 14/14 Dowlair, 9/8 Knuckle Duster. Three lengths, two lengths. Time, 3min 19sec.

the next round Baffar also went out at the second of the stand double toppling over, after clearing the fence. Ruling Moment, Colonel Smart and Baffar had turns at pacemaking but starting thal telling final mile San Quentin led Lisheen by five lengths, with Paladeo, Colonel Smart, and Debater making heavy weather of their task 20 lengths behind and Ruling Moment tailing right off. Lisheen gradually closed on San Quentin and outjumped him at the four furlongs to carry on for an effortless win, with San Quentin beating Debater, who made up a lot of ground. Ruling Moment and Baffling were pulled up and Paladeo and Colonel Smart trailed home well behind Debater. Surprise Favouritism Lorna Leigh justified her surprise favouritism for the Fairlie Handicap, being given a two lengths decision from Haughty Dick, with another Southland candidate, Geisha Girl, a length away hotly pursued by Magnaform. Flying Orders and Luminous Knight were trailed to the straight by Lorna Leigh. Connaught, and Geisha Girl, with Haughty Dick further back. Lorna Leigh quickly worked clear but with 75 yards to go Geisha Girl closed on the weakening leader and looked to have her measure, and Haughtv Dick also came home strongly. Magnaform lodged his claim too late. There was genera! surprise when Lorna Leigh’s number was posted as the winner. Temuka Hack Handicap Detract looked like justifying his favouritism for the Temuka Hack Handicap when he closed on the pacemaker, Revivre, on the home turn but Bright News was handy and beat Detract narrowly but decisively in the run home, with Revivrc sticking on grimly to be a close third.
