FEW BRIGHT FLASHES

DUNEDIN DEFEATS UNION Occasional bright play In the match at Tahuna Park in which Dunedin defeated Union by 11 points to 8. did little to relieve the chill greyness of the day. In the first half, the teams seemed overcome by inertia—possibly the result of the cold —and it was not until the dying stages of the game that any vim was installed into it.

Mistakes characterised the match. The Dunedin inside backs believed too much in their own prowess while the Union men showed inexperience and competency in the forwards did not counter-balance these faults. Serviceable displays for Dunedin were given by J. Riach. a forward who was always prominent, F. Macpherson, a good worker in the loose, and R. McCormack, playing in the half-back position instead of the second fiveeighth’s his usual berth. M. McKercher, second five-eighth, made some fine runs. Further improvement on earlier performances was shown by Union, whose resistance against the Dark Blues’ attacks gathered strength as the game progressed. The forwards, at the head of which K. Knox, D. Miller and D. Moore were usually to be seen, were the sheet anchor of the side, although the backs linked up well once or twice. W. Wood, half-back, was sound, E. Cameron and I. McLaren further out did their best to accomplish something constructive on occasions, and B. Currie, the full-back, kicked well Tries for Dunedin, one of which was converted by Macpherson, were scored by McCormack and Riach and W. Lawrence kicked a penalty. For Union, Wood and H. Rowley scored, and W. Trevathan converted one try. The referee was Mr' J. Frood.
