MEMBERSHIP OF SOCIETY MR ANDERTON’S ATTITUDE P.A. AUCKLAND, May 23. “There may be Communists in the Society for Closer Relations with Soviet Russia, but at the same time there may be members of the National Party in it. My association with the society does not ally me even with the Communist Party of New Zealand and I have never been allied with it, said Mr W. T. Anderton, M.P., when replying to a suggestion that political repercussions might follow Mr Semple’s description of the executive of the society as a Communist front organisation. Both Mr Anderton and Mr C. L. Carr are members of the society, “ I do not think Mr Semple attacked the society, but he did warn the unwary that there may be other organisations which would be used by Communists. Intelligent people, however, are not used by any party. We have no right to attack the Soviet Union. Their Government is the will of their own people. The association of Mr Carr and myself with the society is based on our desire to see international goodwill. For example, I would be equally willing to join a society for closer relations with the United States. Sometimes I think there is a necessity for such an organisation."
