Because of the extraordinary rainfall in the Lower Waikato River area, the State Hydro-electric Department had more power available to-day than North Island consumers could use. When this condition of plenty in an age of shortage suddenly became apparent this morning, the department immediately invited, all North Island power authorities to abandon their cuts scheduled for to-day. Broadcast announcements of this decision were also made. , „ The Electricity Controller, Mr A. E. Davenport, said to-night that at the dams at Mangahao 6.08 in of ram fell in the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. to-day. Since it was Sunday and the power demand was lighter than usual, there was a condition of over-supply. This condition existed only for to-day. The schedule for . the North Island as already drawn up would apply from to-morrow. Mr Davenport said he would review the South Island position to-morrow when reports would be available.
