ARMY-TYPE BISCUITS

PRODUCTION SUGGESTED EXPORT FOR STARVING CHILDREN As part of the United Nations appeal for children, a cnange-over front the production of fancy biscuits, consumed in large quantities in New Zealand, to the fortified type of army biscuits had been suggested by the Dunedin Junior Chamber of Commerce, said the president, Mr A. G. D. Hutton, yesterday. The production of these biscuits would enable the export of a suitable food for the starving children, Mr Hutton added. An approach has been made to the New Zealand executive of the Biscuit and Confectioners Manufacturers’ Association, who appeared receptive to the idea. It is felt by the chamber that adjustments could be made to protect the organisation of the biscuit manufacturers, particularly if the details were left in their hands. We feel that if the proposal was adopted the public woulu be making a real sacrifice, which they would know to be worth while,” said Mr Hutton. Donations would be made more freely for an objective more readily understood. It was suggested that the biscuits could be stamped with the words “ Gift from New Zealand ” in several European languages.
