BEST DOGS IN COUNTRY TO COMPETE

The Farm

Some of the best dogs in New Zealand will compete at the South Island and New Zealand Sheep Dog Championship trials, which will begin June 14 at North Taieri, where properties have been lent by the estate of H. Boyd, by Mrs Y. A. Williamson and by Mr H. McAdam. Entries will close on June 1 with the secretary, Mr N. H. Boyd, “ Glen Falloch,” North Taieri, Mosgiel.

Among the outstanding dogs that will compete are Mr H. H. Harris’s (Taihape) General Haig, the winner of the Long Pull at Nelson in 1946 and at Dannevirke in ,1947, and a prominent competitor at the Canberra Championships in Australia also last year. Another dog which has competed in Australia and which will be seen in action at North Taieri next month, is Mr P. J. L. McKenzie’s (North Auckland) Lad. Mr A. McKay (Hastings) will have both his Bruce and Rose at North Taieri. These dogs were first and second in the New Zealand Huntaway events at Dannevirke last year.

The judges at the South Island and New Zealand Championships this year will all be experienced men. Mr J. S. Tait, who will judge the heading and yarding, is the manager of a station at Dannevirke. He was president of the Dannevirke Club last year when the Dominion Championships were-

conducted at this centre. He is one of New Zealand's leading judges. Mr J. Falconer, of Lindis Pass, who will judge the huntaway and slew, has mustered the full length of the Southern Alps down to Lumsden. He is now a runholder at Lindis Pass. Mr M. B. Hope, a successful runholder and farmer, of Blenheim, will judge the long pull. He has a lifetime experience of the high country. Mr John Nelson, of Dunearn. Southland, is the judge of the straight huntaway. A successful Southland farmer, he is also one of the foremost judges in New Zealand. Those responsible for conducting the trials at North Taieri this year are to be congratulated on their choice of judges. No effort has been spared to obtain men of the highest standard. Many -valuable trophies will be at stake in these, the ninth. New Zealand Championship trials. In three classes there will be trophies each valued at £3O, and one at £25 for another class. Prize money of £3 3s. £2 2s and £1 •Is for second, third and fourth will be offered in each class. Valuable cups and shields will also be offered as special awards.
