BOWLING ORGANISATION

MILLS SHIELD COMPETITION It would not be wise for the centre at its last meeting for the season to consider a motion which might' affect the organisation of the Mills Shield competition during the next 12 months, said the chairman of the North Otago Bow-ling Centre, Mr N. H. Colquhoun, last night. A motion, proposed by Mr E. Congalton, was that in the Mills Shield competition each Oamaru club should enter eight rinks and the combined country clubs should enter eight rinks, making four teams in all. Two games should be played each Saturday, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. “ Bowling is a social sport, and if too much time is taken up with competition matches there is little opportunity for tow-n teams to visit the country clubs,” said Mr Congalton " The motion is intended to helo l all bowlers to maintain interest in the Mills Shield competition until it is concluded and to give country players the benefit of more visits from town teams.” The effect of forming a combined country team would be that the country clubs would lose their identities in the competition. said Mr T. Cahill. Also, the ratio of playei-s in the competition from town and country clubs would be upset. It was decided to write to all clubs giving details of the motion so that they would be able to express their opinions at the annual meeting of the centre. Grant to New- Club In response to a recent deputation to the centre from the Oamaru Services’ Eowling Club, it was decided to make a grant of £25 to the new club. Mr C. Brown said that there were special circumstances surrounding the request. In addition, the formation of a Services’ Club would benefit the game in North Otago as a whole. ”A grant made by us to the club should not be regarded as a precedent,” said Mr Congalton. "Our action is intended to Show appreciation for what members ot the club have done for us."
