NATIONAL SAVINGS

District Quotas Exceeded

The outstanding success attending the National Savings movement throughout New Zealand was shown by a report submitted by the District Organiser, Mr J. M. Casey, to a meeting of the Oamaru National Savings Committee yesterday morning. AU the 352 districts attained their quotas, Mr Casey said, and the Oamaru district, with others, more than doubled its quota. Mr J. M. Sutherland, chief postmaster, was in the chair, and there were also present Messrs J. M. Casey, H. A. Griffin, J. C. Kirkness, T. Mitchell, B. L. Patterson. K Familton, G. Glen, R. A. McDowell, and A. C. McLelland. Mr Casey reported that last year Oamaru's quota was £37.284, and the investments were £84.125. showing a surplus of £46.841. For this year the quota was the same, and since April 1 to the end of last week the investments had been as follows (surpluses being in parentheses):— Kurow £551 (£236), Hampden £202 (£4l). Oamaru £9927 (£5412), the total for the district in six weeks being £ 10,715, with a surplus of £SG9O. The number of new accounts ooened last year was 413. and this vear there had been five new groups, 46* new accounts, and 17 improvements. There were 86 groups operating with savings of between £SOOO to £GOOO a year.

The chairman said the figures were reassuring, and Oamaru was in a very happy position. There had been several contributing factors, including the good work of the organiser, Mr Griffin, and Mrs Reid and the activities of the committee in the early days of the movement. National Savings represented a lucrative shorttime investment, and the people had become National Savings minded. On behalf of the committee Mr J. C Kirkness paid a tribute to the work of the organisers, and thanked Mr Sutherland for his co-operation. He conveyed to Mr Sutherland and Mr Griffin, who is also leaving Oamaru on promotion to Dunedin, and their wives and families, the good wishes of those present for their future happiness and success. Messrs T. Mitchell and K. Familton supported these remarks, and Messrs Sutherland and Griffin acknowledged the messages of goodwill.
