Rapid Progress in West Otago Project

Special Reporter TAPANUI, May.2l. Work was started about three months ago on the erection of a pilot sawmill on the site of the new Governmervt mill which is to be built at Conical Hills, in the Clutha County, to process the State Forest Service’s pinus insignis plantations in the Conical Hills, Dusky, and.Pukerau forests, and the pilot mill was a week ago brought to the stage where it is producing sawn timber for the erection of the main mill buildings. It is estimated that the timber for the main plant should be cut in six months, and that the mill proper will be operating in 12 months. There is no lack of forest from which the timber can be drawn to supply the mill when it is working to capacity. There is an area of 3613 acres planted by the State Forest Service at Conical Hills, 4430 acres at Dusky Forest, and a further 580 acres in the plantation at Pukerau.
