Cargo Lies Unclaimed in Wharf Sheds

Some of the cargo unloaded from the Wainui a week ago at Dunedin was still lying in the wharf sheds, said the chairman, Mr W. R. Clarke, at a meeting of the Otago Harbour Board last night. This caigo included 3000 or 4000 cases of canned goods. One shed had been “put under pawn” by the board, he added. Could the board do anything else but impose a penalty in such circumstances? Mr Clarke also referred to 3000 or 4000 cartons of various orders which were inadequately labelled. He produced one of the labels a small one, typewritten—and asked how men could be expected to read them at night when sorting the cargoes. If cargoes were not labelled in a better manner, improved sorting could not be expected. Mr A. Mcßae said that some of the cargo left in the sheds was consigned to distributing’agents who had no storage space of their own. Mr J. G. Jeffery said that the need for adequate labels had been mentioned to the Shippers and Importers’ Association by him as soon as the present instance came to his notice. v
