PROCEDURE EXPLAINED

HOLDING OF INQUEST WITHOUT BODY p.A. WELLINGTON. May 20. Reference was made to-day by the Attorney-general, Mr Mason, to the Press Association message stating that although 12 months had elapsed since the disappearance of Richmond Stanley Bagby racehorse trainer, of Ellerslie, no authority had been given by the Attorney-general for holding an inquest. Mr Mason said the law formerly was that ar» inquest was to inquire into the cause of death of a person whose body had been recovered. Cases arose where the fact of death was acknowledged, but the body could not be recovered, and the law was recently amended to enable the Attorneygeneral to authorise an inquest into the cause of death in such cases. Applications to hold such inquests normally came through the police, who made the inquiries, and where no body was found great care was taken to ensure that the fact of death was completely established.
