Demand for Male Labour Decreasing

industrial Correspondent WELLINGTON, May 20. Definite easing of the demand for male labour is reported by employers here and is confirmed by the Department of Labour and Employment. Fewer notifications of vacancies are being received, and employers say they are receiving greater response to advertisements for male workers. To a certain extent the easing is attributed to seasonal flaw of workers into the cities, and in some quarters it is attributed directly to shortages of raw material supplies, which have forced employers to mark time with staff expansion, and even to dismiss men. In certain manufacturing industries a condition of over-supply is threatened. This is apparent in some light engineering shops, where manufacturing work has been developed extensively during and since the war. For female labour the demand remains at peak level, since the supply of female workers remains far short of the requirements. Retail houses do not report any general decline in demand from the buying public. Essential goods remain in keen demand.
