EXTENSION PLANS

ALEXANDRA DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

Extensions to the Alexandra District High School as recommended by the architect, Mr C. Muir, were approved by the Otago Education Board at its monthly meeting yesterday. The architect estimated the -.cost at about £26,000, but emphasised that this figure was by no means accurate as it had only hastily been made.

The school’s present heating system was also discussed by the board, which approved the architect’s action in having stoves and piping installed. This was being done, it was explained, to provide heating while the cuts in electrict power, on which the school’s present hot air heating system was dependent, were in operation. In applying for additional classrooms, a general purpose room, library accommodation, a girls’ retiring and rest room, and other facilities, the Alexandra School Committee said the roll of pupils was increasing annually. A plan incorporating all the committee’s suggestions except the provision of a new senior girls’ retiring room, was submitted by the architect. He said that a general purpose room, which would be used principally by the children as a place .to eat their lunches, was essential, because nearly 130 children attending the school took lunches. They could not be expected to eat their lunches outside, especially during the winter. Mr Muir recommended that application be made to the Education Department for a grant for the extensions. Mr R. R. Hunter commented that the plan was “ first-class,” The chairman, Mr J. I. Fraser, said all concerned would be gratified to learn that some building work was to be undertaken in the Central Ward. Approval was given to the plans and it was decided to apply to the department for the grant as recommended.
