PERMANENT POWER SOUGHT

FEDERAL CONTROL OF PRICES

STATE SUBSIDY WITHDRAWAL HINTED

Rec. 8 p.m. ‘ SYDNEY, May 19. The hint recently given by the Prime Minister, Mr J. B. Chifley, that if the Federal Government was refused permanent power over rents, prices, and charges it would refuse subsidies to stabilise prices fixed by Ihe States, was repeated by the Federal Minister of Health, Senator N. E. McKenna, in a broadcast address. Mr McKenna said chat it would be completely unreasonable to expect the Federal Government to continue to provide subsidies from Commonwealth revenue to stabilise prices fixed by the States or by private individuals. If Commonwealth control went there could be no assurance that subsidies in the case of tea, milk, butter, potatoes, coal, and other items would be maintained.
