HOME BURNT DOWN

ELDERLY COUPLE’S LOSS p.A. CHRISTCHURCH, May 19. The home of Mr and Mrs James Graham, 5 Short street, Heathcote, was destroyed by fire about 10.30 a.m. yesterday. For a time it was feared that Mrs Graham had been caught in the house but she had actually gone to a nearby property to call her husband. Mr Graham is 72 years of age and his wife is 65. They lost in the fire everything but the working clothes they were wearing. Their five-roomed house, which was opposite the Heathcote School, was freehold and had been occupied by the couple for 30 years. The building and its contents were insured. , , Mrs Graham gave the alarm when she saw flames in the kitchen near the coal range. A gusty wind fanned the fire, and residents and workmen could do little to check its rapid spread. When the engine from the Woolston Fire Station arrived little fould be done but to prevent the lames from reaching adjoining p/operty.
