SHORTER ROUTE

DUNEDIN-PORT CHALMERS LINE

A shortening of the train journey between Dunedin and Port Chalmers will be made when trains are switched over to the new two-mile section of the main north line between St. Leonards and Sawyers’ Bay next month. The existing track, following the contour of the intermediate bays, will be eliminated, shortening the distance by about 14 chains and providing a straight line. It is proposed, at first, to use a single set of lines, and, if regular supplies of ballast are available from Balclutha, the change-over will take place between June 19 and 20. Work on the deviation, which began before the war, has been speeded up because of the condition of the existing line, and the Railways Department has concentrated on this as an alternative to carrying out heavy renewal work on the old route. The deviation runs straight across the fringe of the harbour and links up •with the Sawyers’ Bay tunnel which has now been completed.
