MR W. STIGLICH

Mr Walter Stiglich, who died on Tuesday, was a well-known and respected figure in Dunedin sporting circles. He was best known perhaps for his interest in boxing. For many years he was treasurer of the Otago Boxing Association, and he remained a member of the executive even after his removal from Dunedin to Portobello. He took a particularly active part in the encouragement of amateur boxing, and when the fortunes of the Otago Boxing Association were at a lower ebb than they are to-day he did much to revive interest in the sport. In his younger days Mr Stiglich played Rugby football as a member of the Union Football Club’s senior team, and in the period just before the first \vorld war he was a successful half-back, also playing in the team which won the championship in 1916. In later years he took up bowls enthusiastically, and he was a successful player with the Portobello Bowling Club, of which he was the secretary for a period, and later president. He was also a first-class billiardist. For many years Mr Stiglich carried on business in the Carlton Book Shop in High street, but some years ago he removed to Portobello, where he was in business as a storekeeper. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity. He is survived by his wife and two children.
