RECORD RETURN

SOUTHLAND WOOL SALES

TWO-MILLION MARK PASSED

Special to the Daily Times

INVERCARGILL, May 19. The total realisation from Southland Wool sold during the past season is £2,497,841, an increase of £594,276 over the amount for last season. This is the first time that the £2,000,000 mark has been exceeded. This increase has been obtained in spite of the fact that the number of bales offered at the Southland sales was smaller this year than last by €605. At the last sale ■of the season, in April, 16,426 bales of new season's greasy wool were sold to a total value of £533,214. For each of the sales the number of bales sold was:—First sale (crutchings etc.), 4498; second sale, 25,159; third sale, 27,052; fourth sale, 16,426; total, 73,135. The decline in the quantity of wool sold was caused mainly by the lesser weight of wool yielded per sheep this season, but the drop was also partly caused by the fact that there was a greater weight of wool to each bale. Since 1939 the value of the Southland wool clip has increased by almost four times. The total wool sold has increased from 50,849 bales in 1939 to 73,135 bales in 1948, and the realisation from £630,443 to £2,497,841.
