EMPIRE THEATRE Described as the funniest of all the 20 comedies made so far by. the popular team, Abbott and Costello, The Wistful Widow of Wagon Gap,” Will open a season at the Empire Theatre to-morrow. Abbott and Costello appear as houseware salesmen who find their way into the wild western town of Wagon Gap, wheie :Costello is charged with shooting a no-good resident. Under the law, Costello must support the victim's widow, the wistful Miss Main, together with her seven unruly children. Every member of the family will be sure to enjoy this hilarious comedy. STATE THEATRE " They Won’t Believe Me,” the headline attraction on the new programme at the State Theatre to-day, is something out of the ordinary in dramatic entertainment. It is the high-tension story of a wealthy wife and her playboy husband who ruins the lives of three women who love him. His wife thwarts' two elopements by pouring out money to luie him back to her, but on the third occasion tragedy overtakes all concerned. As the erring husband, Robert Young has one of the most dynamic roles m his career, and the two “other women are presented with equal facility by Susan Hayward and Jane Greer. There are some intensely thrilling scenes and a sensational climax. ST. JAMES THEATRE Much of the finest and best remembered music from the pen of the greatest songwriter of all time, Franz Schubert, is contained in " Schubert’s Serenade, ’ which will commence a season at the St. James Theatre to-morrow. The film shows Vienna in 1825, with its intrigues and romance, where Schubert, played by Louis Jouvert, is organist at the cathedral. Among the beautiful lyrics in the film are “Ave Maria,” “ Waltz of Yearning,” "Impatience,” "Winter Journey, " Serenade,” " Moment Musical,” and parts of “ Unfinished Symphony,” and the «■ Rosamunde ” ballet music. STRAND THEATRE A good laugh is assured for all who attend the comedy programme at the Strand Theatre during the coming week. Featured films are “.Bringing Up Father, almost an institution with comic strip fans, and " Blondie’s Big Moment," with the ever popular fun team inspired by Chic Young’s sketching pen. Jiggs, the perpetually harassed father, has been labelled by critics as the comic character most likely to endure. In addition to the two main features, the final chapter of the serial. “ Black Arrow ” will be screened.
