KNOCKED OUT IN FIRST ROUND

COLOURED BOXER’S SUCCESS

N.Z.P. A.—Copyright LONDON, May 18. The coloured boxer, Dick Turpin, won the Empirfc middle-weight championship at Coventry to-night / before an open-air crowd of 30.000, when he knocked out the holder, the New Zealander, Bos Murphy, in the first round.

Murphy, who -weighed in at 11.43, was only 2,|lb heavier than his opponent, but -was more ruggedly built, and had the advantage in height. Turpin, however, was expected, to win, especially after Murphy's defeat by Mark Hart. whonrTurpin himself had beaten. The round opened quietly, with Murphy carrying the fight to his opponent. But Turpin pushed him oil, and only two serious blows—two hard left hooks to the body from Murphy—had been struck, when the complexion of the fight suddenly changed. Coming in, Murphy met a solid left to the chin, which put him down for six. When the New Zealander arose Turpin showed him another left, and then sent, across a terrific right, which put Murphy fiat on his back. He was on his feet one second after the count ended, but he would have been in no condition to continue even if he had beaten it. The new British Empire titleholder, Dick Turpin, is to meet Vince Hawkins for the British title in June. Bos Murphy won the British Empire middle-weight tiUe when he defeated Vince Hawkins oh points in the Royal Albert Hall on January 26. After the fight Murphy said: “ I hope the people in New Zealand are dancing now.” Coloulias Defeated In a preliminary bout to the Murphy-Turpin fight, Ric Sanders, of Leicester, defeated New Zealand's Billy Coloulias on points.
