Essex mode a sorry showing against the accurate Australian attack at Southend to-day, being dismissed twice in the day and suffering overwhelming defeat by an innings and 451 runs. Toshack completed the rout a quarter of an hour before lunch. He made the ball fizz off the pitch, and. keeping it well up to the batsmen, had them in difficulties. Essex collapsed again in the second innings, losing six for 46 before Pearce and Peter Smith became associated in a seventh-wicket partnership which realised 131 runs.
