TROTTING NOTES

By the Spirting Editor Mav 22 Wellington T.C. May 29 Canterbury Park T.C. June 5, 7 .... Ashburton T.C. ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT. " Inquirer,” Dunedin. —The race is known as the Wellington Trotting Club Cup Handicap. Jottings Congo Song has been made favourite for the Winter Handicap at the Hutt Park meeting and Coral Princess for the Farewell Handicap. Lou Hall has not struck form this season and she has reached a place only once in 16 starts. , , On approval looks well placed in his two races at Hutt Park, but his task will be added to by the size of the fields in front of him. ' Ada Scott .paid nearly two score for a win and Ipso Facto over a score for a place in the Beaconsfield Trot at Washdyke. Brother to Haughty Tradition, the outsider of the field in the Opihi Trot at Timaru, did not have a single ticket invested on his win chance. He is a brother to Haughty. Engaged at Hutt Park The Quite- Sure trotter Quartermaster, who races, in the interests of the Forbury Park trainer, T. A. Greaney, does not control his speed well, and once he leaves his feet his driver has difficulty in getting him back to the right gait. He is very well at present, however, and provided he travels on a smooth gait he is capable of adding interest to the Navy Handicap and the Pacific Handicap at Hutt Park on Saturday. Prominent Throughout On the first dav of the recent Forbury Park meeting Captain Sandy was prominent throughout the running of the Port Chalmers Handicap and finished third to Scottish Brogue and Gough’s Pride, and on the second day he again finished third, this time to Make Believe and Gough's Pride. Trained at Oamaru by J. Bain, Captain Sandy will be raced at Hutt Park on Saturday and he will be bracketed with Dance Hall. Gold Bar Gelding Chief Officer, who is engaged at the Hutt Park meeting, is one of A. Holmes’s team and is a three-year-old gelding by Gold Bar from Navy Blue, by Man o’War from Derryvale, by Logan Pointer from Merivale, by Golindo from a Lincoln Yet mare. He has won one race and been placed twice in nine starts this season. Suited By Distance All Ashore has shown speed in her races but so far has been lacking in stamina. She is on the front mark in the Manavvatu Handicap at Hutt Park on Saturday and the distance should suit her. Consistent Form At the Wellington meeting last month Vpco Power scored three seconds and a third in lour starts and the Quite Sure gelding will be raced on the same course on Saturday. He looks a good place prospect from the front marks in the Navy Handicap and the Pacific Handicap. Doubly Engaged Bull’s Eye has been started no fewer than 23 times this season and has scored three wins and 14 plaeings. He is engaged in two races at Hutt Park on Saturday and will only need to begin smartly to get a share of the stakes. On the same course last month he was started three times for a win and two seconds. Clueless One of the best performances registered by Clueless this season was at the Wyndham meeting in March, when he ran second to Duncraig in the Final Handicap. He gave 12 yards to the winner and was beaten by a nose. He did not reach a place at the recent Forbury Park and Oamaru meetings, but if he runs up to his Wyndham form he will have a chance at Hutt Park, where he is engaged in two races.

While an auctioneer was knocking down an article of furniture with the usual formula, ’’ Going, goin, gone,” at a sale in a cottage at Halse, Taunton, England,, the floor collapsed and 14 people disappeared through it. They fell into a cellar 9ft below, the existence of which was unknown either to the owner of the house or the auctioneers.
