RACING NEWS

By the Sporting Editor May 22 Waikato R.C. May 22 Sth. Canterbury J.C. May 22 Foxton R.C. May 29 Levin R.C. June 5. 7. 12 .. Dunedin J.C. Jottings Nominations tor the Dunedin winter meeting are due on Friday. Good Armour (Dink —Armutum), winner of the Waikato Steeples last Saturday, won the Great Northern Hurdles three years ago and last season he won tire Wellington Steeples. A Stone Overweight Benbecula carried a stone overweight in the Tekapo Hurdles at Washdyke and was always a long way back. He has so far shown no liking for the jumping game. Began Slowly Geisha Girl was restive at the barrier in the Seadown Handicap at Washdyke and did not get away well. She quickly ran up into a good position, however, and was one of the leaders at the home turn, only to drift out of the picture in the run up the straight. Tattoo in Work Included in F. Shaw's team at Wingatui is Tattoo, a half-sister by Irish Lancer to Vanity King. She has had six unplaced starts this season and in all probability will be raced at the local meeting next month. The Grate's Win The feature of the The Grate’s win at Washdyke was the double-figure dividend she paid. The Salmagundi mare takes time to get balanced in her races, but she has a good finishing run and is capable of winning in better company. Finished Sixth Boolamskee was the outsider but one in the Elloughton Handicap at Washdyke. He ran a fair rape, finishing sixth, and the outing should help to tune him up for his engagements at the Great Northern meeting. Unlucky All’s Fair was the unlucky runner in the Claremont Hack Handicap at Washdyke. She got away badly, but put in a brilliant run around the home turn. The PinK Coat filly actually headed Ned Kelly in the straight, but the effort required to make up her lost ground took some of the steel out of her and she finished second. With a good start she would have been hard to beat. Cro: -well Course The Cromwell Jockey Club is endeavouring to obtain information concerning the ownership of the buildings and trees on its course, and recently the club approached the Borough Council requesting its assistance in having the matter straightened out The property is vested in a Racecourse Trust for the purpose of racing on a certain area and the Jockey Club wishes to know whether the buildings and improvements belong to the club or the trust. A legal opinion is to be sought. Wingatui Jumper Penny Nap who is among tho.se being prepared at Wingatui for the winter meeting next month, has been lightly raced this season, having been started only three times, without reaching a place. His most recent race was in the Monowai Stee'ples at the Southland meeting last month. He had to be pulled up, however, as his rider lost his irons early in the race. Penny Nap is a four-year-old by Cardsharper from Woodfire, who was got by Autumnus from Fairhaven by Pilgrim’s Progress from Elusive, by Trenton from Eleusis, by Barcaldine. Master Play Unlucky The Riccarton-trained steeplechaser, Master Play, had bad luck in the Waikato Steeplechase at Te Rapa last Saturday, being run off by the riderless Town Survey with nine furlongs to go. Master Play was well placed at the time and was going particularly well. Town Survey had fallen on the first round and continued riderless until he reached the crossing. Rehandicaps for Great Northerns The following rehandicaps for the Auckland Racing Club's meeting at Ellerslie have been declared by Mr A. Tronson:— Great Northern Hurdles: British Mint, 51b, to 9.12. Great Northern Steeplechase: Good Armour, 71b to 10.13. Cornwall Handicap: Sylis 71b, to 9.1. Greek Boy I will not be rehandicapped in the Great Northern Steeplechase, nor Prince Chat in the Cornwall Handicap.
