SUCCESSFUL THREE TIMES

The principal event on the flat on the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting next month will be the Birthday Handicap, which was first run away back in 1873 and was won by Merryman, a four-year-old who carried 6.5. The race has been run over varying distances from a mile to a mile and a-half. The heaviest weight successfully carried in the race was the 10 stone with which Rorke’s Drift won in 1916. He was successful again in 1918 with 9.6 and in 1921 with 8.4. Horses who have won the race two years in succession are Little Nell 1874 and 1875, Starshot 1898 and 1899, Terrapin in 1903 and 1904, Full Swing in 1926 and 1927, and Royal Gallant in 1935 and 1936. Fast Passage the winner in 1932, was also successful in the New Zealand Cup and the Auckland Cup during the same season. Among the jockeys who have ridden winners of the race are T. Buddicom, R. Derrett, J. McCombe, C. Emerson, F. E. Jones, J. Beale, W. (“Darky”) Robinson, A. Eastwood, L. J. Ellis, C. T. Wilson, L. W. Hare, R. J. Mackie, and A. E. Didham. The Birthday Handicap is steeped in tradition and the nominations for next month’s race will ho doubt be of substantial proportions.
