FUSION OF COURSES DISCUSSED

STUDENTS’ HEALTH CENTRE CONSIDERED

Several recommendations concerning the desirability of devising a general first-year course in science subjects which would s4rve the purpose of both the B.Sc. examination and the present medical intermediate examination were presented to the Council of the University of Otago at its monthly meeting yesterday afternoon. The full report was not available to the press but, broadly, the recommendations of a sub-committee drawn from the medical and science faculties were that a fusion of the courses would be possible in the case of chemistry but not in the case of physics. No reduction in the standard of the chemistry requiremnets could be considered for students intending to take a medical course. The chancellor, the Very Rev. Dr D. C. Herron, presided. Others present were Messrs W. R. Brugh, Carl V Smith, I. Fraser, M. Joel, A. Steel. Rice, J. C. H. Somerville. Professor F. G. Soper and Dr C. M. Focken. The joint award of the Macmillan Brown Prize to Mr J. D. F. Melser and Miss Sheila Traill, and the award of the Royal New Zealand Dental Corps Prize to Mr D. E. Poswillo were approved. A letter was received from Lord Beveridge expressing appreciation of the hospitality accorded him and Lady Beveridge during their stay in Dunedin. An offer of a set of Lord Beveridge’s pamphlets for the library was accepted with .thanks. Dr A. Douglas was appointed the council’s representative at the Ninth International Congress of Industrial Medicine. ~, „ The purchase of part of the Pleasant Valley Sanatorium for use as a recreational and health centre for students was recommended by the Professorial Board and referred to a committee for a report.
