PRESENCE RESENTED

CONSTABLE ON WHARF

WATERSIDERS PROTEST

P.A. GREYMOUTH, May 18. The presence of a constable overlooking cargo unloading operations on the Kakapo at Greymouth yesterday—apparently as a sequel to the recent discovery of pillaged goods in watersiders’ homes, and the arrest of three men—led to the waterside workers leaving one hold of the vessel and refusing to resume until the policeman was withdrawn. The shipping company (which denied responsibility for the policeman’s presence) acted, it is understood, on a recommendation from the union that he be asked to withdraw. This was done, and work was resumed after a stoppage of about 10 minutes. In a statement to-day the secretary of the Greymouth Watersiders’ Union, Mr A. J. Panther, said that the action of the policeman in placing himself in a position where he could see the men discharging cargo was unique in the history of the port. The workers had registered an emphatic protest at being regarded as potential criminals. He added that if there was a repetition the union would most certainly take the matter further. Work was proceeding normally today.
