WISE HANDLING

PATRIOTIC AND WELFARE FUNDS

“ When the fund was started 33 years ago none of us thought that it would still be in existence to-day, but we are in the happy position of having £23,000 still to expend and we are hopeful that the money will last another 10 years,” said Mr J. L. Salmond, vice-president of the Otago Patriotic and General Welfare Association, speaking at the annual meeting of the body yesterday morning. He said that the fund had been carefully conserved and that the committee was entitled to great credit for the able way in which it had handled the affairs of the association. Every needy case was considered on its merits and no deserving case had been turned down.

“.The subscribers of 33 years ago would be well satisfied with the way the funds have been handled.” continued Mr Salmond. “We cannot quite catch up with increased costs, particularly in the case of civil widows, but we are doing our best.” The committee would continue to operate along the same lines in the future, he concluded.

The reports of the executive, the Finance Committee and the Welfare Committee were, received, and the balance sheets were approved as being satisfactory. The Mayor, Mr Cameron, presided. Others present were:—Messrs A. C. Laing, S. B. Smith, A. Duncan, S. P. Cameron, H. L. Paterson, W. F. Forrester, W K. Cameron, J. S. Skinner. A. McHutchon, J. J. Marlow, J. M. White, Edgar Hazlett and Salmond. At the conclusion of the annual meeting a special meeting was held for the purpose of electing committees. Mr Salmond was re-elected vice-president and Mr R. A. Johnston was again appointed to the office of treasurer. The executive, the Finance Committee, and the Welfare Committee, were re-elected.
