HOUSING SCHEME

PLANS FOR MUSSEL BAY PORT CHALMERS COUNCIL MEETS Sketch plans of the Housing Department’s scheme for Mussel Bay were approved last night by the Port Chalmers Borough Council. A Gazette notice recently announced the Government’s intentions of taking over the af-ea for the new State house settlement. The plans provide for 52 housing sections, including seven double units and two four units. Over -three acres are set aside for a school ’and five acres for a recreatiqnal ground. The total area of the land is nearly 30 acres. Street Lighting The Works Committee reported that the Electric Power Department would be asked to switch on street lights between 6.30' a.m. and 7.30 a.m. for the convenience of residents who caught the early train. Claim for Telephone Booth Dissatisfaction was expressed at a letter received from the district engineer of the Post and Telegraph Department, saying that the department was net willing to approve the installation of a public telephone call office at Carey’s Bay. The engineer stated that it would result in a considerable loss to the department. The council decided to refer the matter to the General Committee, with the recommendation that representations should be made to the Postmaster-general. Bus Shelters Materials would be provided for the erection of bus shelters, stated a letter from the acting manager of the Railway Road Services at Dunedin, Mr W. Marshall. The building of the shelters would have to be a council responsibility. Emergency Water Storage The immediate provision of emergency storage capacity for a supply of water at Sawyers’ Bay was urged by the Port Chalmers Fire Board in a letter to the council. The Water and Gas Committee, in its report, said that it was investigating the possibility of a sump or dam to be made in the creek.
