STRING QUARTET
INTERNATIONAL REPUTATION The Queensland State String Quartet, which in a little over three years has built up an international reputation, will give a recital in Dunedin on Thursday night. Formed in August, 1944, the ensemble has developed from its modest beginnings into the finest group of its kind in Australia and New Zealand, possessing an extensive repertoire of both classical and modern chamber music. The quartet came into existence when Ernest Llewellyn, whom many consider to be the Commonwealth’s foremost violinist, was commissioned by the Queensland Education Department to form a group to perform in the schools and thus assist in the advancement of musical appreciation among the children of the State. Its success since then has been astonishing. Neville Cardus, the brilliant music critic, has placed the quartet in world class. Ernest Llewellyn is the leader, while the other members are: Harold Taberner, violinist: David Powell, viola player; and Don Howley. ’cello. Taberner was born Irt New Zealand, and was at one time a member of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
