Mr G. K. Armstrong was appointed to the dual position of deputy city engineer and deputy city building surveyor at a meeting of the City Council last night. Three applications were received for the position. At a meeting of the Dunedin Drainage and Sewerage Board last night, Mr C. D F. Bowie was appointed to the position of chief ‘plumbing inspector on the retirement of Mr H. Taylor. Mr Bowie’s application was the only one received. The Port Chalmers Borough Council decided at its meeting last night to send 'a letter of congratulation to Mr H. A. Whyte, who has been appointed manager of the National Bank of New Zealand at Wellington. Mr Whyte was born at Port Chalmers and began his career in the bank at its branch there.

' It was stated at an inquest at Bnxham, Devon, that while petrol flowing from the tank of a crashed aeroplane . was in danger of igniting, a woman crawled under the aircraft in an effort to release her husband and the Pilot. The coroner described it as a brave- and desperate deed.” The inquest was on Alfred Cash, retired civil engineer, of Penn Hili v Hillhead, Brix- , ham, who died from injuries received when the aeroplane turned over and fell 50 or 60 feet in taking off.
