BALCLUTHA

RUGBY SUB-UNION A protest by Toko Club was upheld at the monthly meeting of the South Otago Rugby Sub-union and the result of -a Second Grade match was reversed. The game was between Toko and Crescent, Elayed at Kaitangata on May 8 and won y Crescent, but the winners’ team included two senior players. Vincent Sub-union wrote agreeing that the challenge for the Topp Cup be played at Alexandra on Monday, June 7. Mr J. Murray was appointed manager of the South Otago team. Mr S. J. Ottrey, of Milton, was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Senior Selection Committee. In accordance with notice of motion previously given, it was decided that the Referees’ Association be granted representation on the sub-union, and that notice of protests and ordering off of players must be lodged within three days instead of seven. A motion that the Second Grade competition be named a Senior B Grade competition was lost by 10 votes to 5. An oiler by Mr A. McKenzie, of Balclutha. to present a trophy for the Fourth Grade competition was accepted. It was decided to contribute up to £lO towards the expenses of South Otago primary school boys taking part in the provincial trials for an Otago team to play Southland. FEDERATED FARMERS At the monthly meeting of Clutha branch of Federated Farmers on Saturday night, it was reported that 20 entries had been received for the ridges swede crop competition. It was decided that first prize be £2 2s hnd a miniature cup and the second prize £1 Is. Concern at the lack of care and supervision exercised in driving stock to and from Balclutha saleyards was expressed in a letter from the Balclutha Borough Council.—The letter was received, members stating that if property owners would keep their gates closed no damage would be caused and driving of stock in the borough would be made less difficult. In reply to a complaint from the branch regarding the delay at the Balclutha Railway Station of the 4.0 p.m. Dunedin-Clinton slow train, the acting stationmaster, Balclutha, wrote stating that carriages were detached at Balclutha and goods wagons added. The single carriage which remained was more than sufficient to accommodate all the passengers, but shunting took considerable time. The present system was the most economical. RUGBY REFEREES’ ASSOCIATION There was a fairly large attendance at the monthly meeting of the South Otago Rugby Referees’ Association, the president, Mr J. Roy, being in the chair. The Clutha Club wrote questioning some of the decisions given by the referee in the senior matclj, Clinton v. Clutha, and requesting that a greater degree of uniformity in rulings be attempted.— After a discussion in committee, the letter was received, and it was decided to notify the club that the facts in the disputed rulings were not as stated in the club’s letter. SATURDAY’S GOLF On Saturday the Balclutha Men’s Club played a Bogey Match. The best cards were handed in by the following:—A Grade: E. W. Bird 1 up, W. L. Jolly 1 down. B Grade: D. Tripp 2 down.
