EARLY ENGLISH MUSIC

Otago Women’s Club The Music Circle of the Otago Women’s Club held its usual monthly meeting in the lounge on Friday, May 14, with Miss Stella Bayley in the chair. The evening was entitled ** British Music Through the Centuries,” and was arranged by Mesdames P. Dick, Turner and Miss Greeba Allen. Miss Allen read an interesting paper, on early English music, which was illustrated by traditional folk songs sung by Mrs Focken. piano solos by Byrd and Dr Bull by Miss Sheelagh Thompson, and two compositions by Purcell by Miss Joan Stewart. Mrs Dick read the paper on the next period, which was illustrated by songs by Elgar and Stanford, sung by Miss Bertha Rawlinson, and one by Holst by Mrs Phyllis Turner. A part song by Hurlestone by circle members and a piano duet by German by Misses A. White and Allen. Mrs Turner took as her subject composers of the present day. Tills was illustrated by songs by John Ireland and Michael Head, sung by Miss Bertha Raw,linson, and piano duos by Olive Turner, Arthur Benjamin and Balfour Gardner by Mrs Campbell and Miss Mary Martin. The accompanists were Mesdames Eric Miller. Dick and Campbell.
