IMPROVING GALLOPER
Wild Chase Mare Mestiza TIMARU FIELD OUTCLASSED Mestiza’s performance in winning the Elloughton Handicap at Washdyke on Saturday was a particularly good one. In the early stages of the race she was standing up to the leaders long starts, but when heads were turned for home she galloped over everything and outclassed the field. This was Mestiza’s second win in open company and her record for the season is now 12 starts for four wins and three placings. At the Westland meeting in January she won the Brunner Hack Handicap, of seven furlongs, with 8.6, and the Kanieri Handicap, over the same distance, with 9.2. Then came her first win in open company, the Peninsula Handicap at the Bank’s Peninsula meeting in March. She finished brilliantly to beat Thornbridge and Faithful Pal in 2min 5 4-ssec. A four-year-old by Wild Chase, Mestiza was got from Mulatto, by Nigger Minstrel from Silver Grey, a mare tracing back to Wild Oats, and she shows every promise of developing into a really smart performer.
