WEEK-END MEETINGS

Mestiza Successful at Timaru STEEPLECHASE TO LISHEEN Special to the Daily Times CHRISTCHURCH, May 16. Honours were well divided at Washdyke yesterday, Mestiza and Ned Kelly winning for Riccarton, Lisheen and Haughty Dick for Invercargill, Sphere for Washdyke, and The Grate for Wingatui. Mestiza made short work of the opposition over the final stages of the Elioughton Handicap and this Wild Chase mare is certain to improve now that the tracks are easier. As in her first success in open class, she was again ridden by the Washdyke apprentice, D. F. Coombe, who did not get bustled when Verdant, hotly pursued first by Broie and then by Knight Crusader, worked out to a lead of 10 lengths at the end of three furlongs. Mestiza was then fully 16 lengths back with a majority of the other runners and she worked up to concertpitch, gradually improving all the way along the back straight. Broie was the first of the leading division to drop out and Verdant and Knight Crusader were noticeably slowing up, enabling Great Coon and Romantic to close on therh after passing the four furlongs. Mestiza was improving appreciably all the time and when the straight was reached she was within striking distance. Falconbridge, who had been with her, was some distance behind and Grill had not made any impression from near the rear of the field. Great Coon made a short-lived challenge and Mestiza dived into a clear lead within a few strides and it was all over. Falconbridge came through on the inside to beat the others just as easily as Mestiza beat him, with Grill coming late on the scene to snatch third place from Knight Crusader. The order after the placed horses was Grand Pal, Boolamskee (who ran a solid race), Desert Victory, Great Coon, and Broie. Lord Dundonald was never dangerous.

The totalisator handled £35,906, compared with £24,632 last year. The results are as follows: TEKAPO HURDLES,

the run to the first hurdle, Royal Saleve and Askim collided, Royal Saleve losing his rider, R. G. Bradshaw. Claremont Hack Handicap Ned Kelly was steadied after being first out in the Claremont Hack Handicap, allowing Bonny Royal, Baracha, and Jean Harlow to set the pace for him. Once the straight was reached Ned Kelly headed off the pacemakers but was himself headed by All's Fair. Ned Kelly had too much in reserve and beat All’s Fair decisively, with Bonny Royal struggling on for htird ahead of Baracha, The Turk, and Revivre. Kingsdown Handicap The Grate had to prove herself a smart mare to win the Kingsdown Handicap as with Siegwood, Wild Aske, and Sword Dancer she dwelt at the start. B. Southee worked The Grate forward smartly and after joining the leaders on the same bend she took over and held on strongly. Both Detract, who had 'difficulty in working clear, and Loch Lennox, who had had to drift to avoid a weakening rival near the four furlongs, finished fast for the minor placings. Moonlit, who had her chance, was a useful fourth, followed by Bright News and the. win favourite, St. Simper, who had shared the pacemaking, first with Sally Gazelle, then Sword Dancer, and then Wild Aske.
