NOTES ON THE RUNNING

LISHEEN’S EASY WIN Special to Daily Times TIMARU, May 16. Lisheen gave a reasonably safe display of jumping in the Pareora Hack Steeplechase to win easily from two other Southland runners, San Quentin and Debater. Lisheen had won as a steeplechaser at the Birchwood Hunt meeting two years ago, but had failed to hold his form and had taken up the role of hurdler again With San Quentin, he was taken along quietly, trailing first Colonel Smart, who vwas eventually pulled up, and then Cavalryman, who had had enough with five furlongs still to run. Lisheen then went to the front and superior pace enabled him to keep clear of San Quentin for the rest of the journey. Debater was well tailed off but plugged along for third, with Tamerlane, who was later disqualified the next to finish. R. E. Page, the rider of Tamerlane, was fined £5 for continuing on in the race after having run off at the board fence near the three and a-half furlongs on the final round. Amorlad jumped safely but was well back throughout, and Minstrel Boa completed Ihe course after being at the rear throughout the final round. Edward broke down at the end of six furlongs and Gambling Site, when struggling, bumped his rider off at the brush near the five furlongs. Seadown Handicap Haughty Dick, who had failed in his 10 earlier starts in open class this season, returned good double figure odds in winning the Seadown Handicap. W. F. Ellis jumped him out smartly from the barrier and soon worked him into a handy position Geisha Girl, Theocritus and Luminout Knight were setting a solid pace out in front and once the straight was-reached Haughtv Dick sped clear into the lead and held on grimly. Deep Harmony lost his position at a critical stage but finished brilliantly and was fast overhauling Haughty Dick at the finish. Connaught was also doing her best work in the run home, being right up in line and cutting Theocritus out of third Place. Luminous Knight wai close up. Relampago was handy early but drifted, as did Flving Orders and Te Muka, but Duvaals, Solver, Legal Right, Nightblush, Night Fighter, and Mysterious Melodv all started badly. Tckapo Hurdles Pedantic looked lo have the Tekapo Hurdles in hand when he established a good lead with six furlongs to run but Sphere quickly took up the chase and after heading him half a dozen strides after clearing the final flight, beat him by a neck. Big Top, third, was always prominent but Robert made up leeway for fourth. Kosciusko and Wild Cry did not hold their prominent positions long. Detain and Benbecula were slow away with Young Bob, Askim, and Royal Saleve. In
