RIVER ALMOST NORMAL
THREAT TO WAIROA PAST P.A. NAPIER, May 15. Virtually isolated yesterday, when flood waters closed the three main outlet routes, the township of Wairoa is now felt to be safe from the danger of fyrther flooding. At 6 o’clock last evening water from the swollen Wairoa River was pouring over its bank into the township’s main street, Marine parade, while the decking of the concrete traffic bridge had disappeared under the flood waters. At the height of the flood it seemed that the bridge was doomed, for it had to take the full force of huge logs which were being swirled against the pylons and superstructure at a speed of 30 miles an hour. This morning, however, after an all-night trial of strength, the only evidence of the buffeting was a deep layer of caked mud and silt, with debris draped over the entire length of the bridge. The river was back within four feet of normal.
