GENERAL ASSEMBLY
“ PITIFULLY INADEQUATE ” NEW ZEALAND DELEGATE’S VIEWS N.Z.P.A.' —Copyright LAKE SUCCESS, May 14. The Political Committee of the General Assembly, attempting to find an eleventh-hour arrangement for Palestine,, to-day heard Sir Carl Berendsen (New Zealand) call the Assembly’s work “ pitifully inadequate and dismal.” He said: “I regret this situation more than I can say. We are forced back now to what wrestlers call ‘ catch as catch can.’ “ I must express my deep and bitter disappointment that the assembly has found itself unable to do more, and my grave apprehension of the result of our failure to grapple with the realities of the situation. As the result of our failure —and let no one pretend that this is not a failure—there is an urgent compelling reason for continued and determined support of the United Nations Charter and its principles. “We can do better. We will do better when we have learned to keep peace and order in the world than by making soeeches over the microphone at Lake Success.”
