CENTRAL OTAGO PUBLICATIONS ALEXANDRA HERALD AND LAKE COUNTY MAIL Special Reporter ALEXANDRA. May 14. The most interesting move in Central Otago journalistic history for years is the announcement of the impending combination of the Alexandra Herald with the Lake County Mail. The first issue of the bi-weekly combined paper, to be known as the Central Otago News, is expected early next month. The Alexandra Herald is one ot the few survivors of a once sturdy collection of rural news sheets and one o* the oldest, being established before the turn of the century. The Lake County Mail, on the other hand, is a comparative ' newcomer to the ranks of tne province’s papers, as it arose after a temporary hiatus from the ashes of the old-established Lake Wakatip Mail over a year ago. Country districts have always shown considerable local pride and interest in their own papers, but the rising costs of production and newsprint, plus staff difficulties, have forced many smaller sheets into retirement. The Central Otago News will retain the tabloid size favoured by the Mail.
