FIGURES STATED TO BE INACCURATE

P.A. WELLINGTON, May 14. The head office of the Union Steam Ship Company commented to-day that the estimate of 5700 persons waiting to cross the Tasman to Australia, which was given by a tourist agency booking for the respective companies, was, in its opinion, pure fiction. The same applied, said the Union Company, to the division of the numbers waiting, as between sea and air and the assertion that more passengers were waiting in Australia than in New Zealand. The company said that no tourist agency had the facts. The experience was that waiting lists were not a reliable guide as to the number of pasaengers actually available. As far as the temporary insufficiency of transportation by sea was concerned, that was due directly to the nations’ paramount need of passenger ships in the recent war. It was anticipated that it would be remedied for the next tourist season, the company added.
