HEAVY WAITING LIST
PASSAGES ACROSS TASMAN NO RELIEF IN SIGHT P a WELLINGTON, May 14. It is estimated that 5700 persons are waiting to cross the Tasman to Australia. The Wahine will leave Sydney to-morrow for Wellington for the last time for approximately four months, and during that period there will be no regular transtasman passenger sea service. The waiting list of 5700 is made up of the following prospective passengers: Wahine, 1200; Tasman Em- * pire Airways, 4000; Matson Line, 500. Tasman Empire Airways have not been accepting names for the waiting list for some time. The Marine Phoenix (Matson Line) is making her last trip and no replacement is in sight. It is stated that the transtasman travel position has so deteriorated that it was likely that any Australian visitor would have to work in New Zealand for a living until able to get a passage to Australia. It is estimated that for every passenger waiting in New Zealand there are at least two in Australia waiting.
