QUIET WEEK
CITY FRUIT MARTS LITTLE VARIETY OFFERED It was a quiet week in the city fruit marts, and only a small variety of fruit was on offer. Three deliveries of apples were made this week, and tile bulk of the fruit, which was grown In Central Otago, was excellent. The varieties released were Johnathan, Scarlet Nonpareil and Dunn's Favourite. Only one small delivery of Winter Cole pears was made, and the market could absorb considerably more. A shipment of bananas and Island lemons Is expected to arrive by the Kamo from Wellington next week. The demand for tomatoes is still confined to lines of choice quality. Those affected by frost, or of poor grades, are impossible to sell Grapes are in steady supply and the market is firm. Passion fruit, however, are in short supply, and values increased during the week Lower prices were ruling for tree tomatoes, of which there were heavy supplies. A few Chinese gooseberries came to hand. A shipment of melons from Gisborne reached the market after some delay on the wharves. The condition of the consignment was poor, and repacking was necessary. V . Cabbages and cauliflowers are still in short supply. Cauliflowers are selling. at high values, and cabbages are bringing the ceiling price. Carrots and parsnips have a good inquiry, but supplies are on the short side. Swedes are plentiful, and so also are marrows. A few green peas are still coming forward, and are bringing good prices. Lettuces were difficult to sell during the week, owing to the colder weather. Celery is in good supply and values are a little easier. Range of Prices The rates ruling at the end of the week were:— Lemons.—New Zealand grown: Town, 25s a bushel; country, 245. Grapefruit.—Jamaican; Town, 46s 6d a case; country, 43s 6d. Bananas.—To arrive. Quinces. —4s to 6s a half-case. Cape gooseberries, to 7s a half-case. Pears, 7s 6d a half-case. Grapes, 3s 6$ to 4s 6d lb; Gros Coimars, 5s 6d to 6s lb. ■ Apples.—Johnathan, 12s Gd to 13s 6d a case; cookers, 12s to 13s; cases 9d extra. Tomatoes. —Hothouse, Is 6d to 2s 4d lb; outside grown, 4d to Is; medium, 3d to sd: inferior and frosted, unsaleable. Passion fruit, 12s to 15s a case. Tree tomatoes, 9d to Is lb. Chinese gooseberries, 2s to 2s 3d lb. Jam melons, ljd lb. Green peas. 7d to Is Id; inferior, 4d. Lettuce: Choice, to 2s Gd a dozen. Carrots, 3s" to 5s a sugar bag. Cabbage, 16s 6d cwt. Pumpkins, to lid lb. Marrows. 5s to 7s cwt Beetroot, to Is 6d dozen. Celerv, 6s to 9s a dozen heads. Silver beet. ‘ 17s cwt. Leeks, 9d to Is a bundle. Brussels sprouts, 6d to 8d lb.- Spinach, 2s to 4s a dozen bundles. Parsnips, to 7s 6d a sugar bag.
