DOMINION'S EXAMPLE

CARE OF POLISH CHILDREN “INSPIRATION TO WORLD” P.A. WELLINGTON, May 14. What New Zealand had done for the Polish children' had been an inspiration to the world, and should be an example, to all, said Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, speaking to members of the Cabinet and other guests in the Cabinet room, Parliament Buildings, to-day. The Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, welcoming Cai'dinal Spellman, described him as not only a leading American citizen and a leading church dignitary, but also as a great humanitarian and a great Christian whose wide sympathies were not confined to his own faith. Mr Fraser recalled the comradeship between American servicemen and New Zealanders during the war, and Cardinal Spellman, in his reply, voiced appreciation ot New Zealand’s warm hospitality to the American troops who came to the Dominion in the war years. “May I tell you how much I appreciate what you have done personally, not only as a leader of this people in war, not only as a leader of this people in peace, but also as a leader in carrying out what is necessary for humanity—for what you did for the Polish children should be an example to all,” the cardinal told the. Prime Minister. Cardinal Spellman recounted how he had seen Polish children under unhappy conditions in other parts of the world while their fathers fought on the side of the Allies, and said that what New Zealand was doing for the children was a great example of humanitarianism.

The Wellington Town Hall was packed to the doors at noon for the city’s welcome to the cardinal and other high dignitaries of the Roman Catholic Church who accompanied him. In further reference at the civic reception to the Polish children in New Zealand, Cardinal Spellman said that Poland to-day unfortunately did not enjoy the independence won by other democratic nations in war. “We must condemn atheistic Communism as an enemy of freedom and of all men who believe in God,” said his Eminence.
