GRADUATES' ASSOCIATION

Reception in Somerset Lounge

Wearing black embossed velvet, Miss Lucy Morton, president of the Otago Graduates’ Association, welcomed graduates from all over New Zealand at a reception in the Somerset Lounge last evening. She made particular mention of three visiting inspectors—Miss Hurle, Miss Tyndal, and Mr Hunter.

Congratulations were extended to Mr Oliver Begg on his election to the presidency of the Secondary Schools’ Association and to Mr E. J. Aim, who has been elected the first life member of the association.

Dr R. Nimmo, professor of physics at the University of Otago, gave an address on his experiences during the war period in connection with research at the Universities of Birmingham and California (Berkeley branch). He contrasted the systems of staffing and conditions in both these universities with those in New Zealand universities. There appeared to be more advanced teaching in Britain, he said, but, while in America the lower grades were seldom taken seriously, those at the top seemed to excel in their own line.

While at Birmingham, Dr Nimmo was a member of a team which eventually succeeded in making a discovery which was an important factor in the perfecting of radar. Later, at the University of California, where there are 20,000 students, he said that he worked in a radiation laboratory with technical services never imagined in England. Mr McAloon, the retiring president of the Secondary Schools’ Association, thanked Dr Nimmo. and expressed appreciation of the hospitality extended to the visiting delegates while in Dunedin.
