ALARM EXPRESSED

DANGER FROM DRIFTING MINES P.A. AUCKLAND, May 12. Two drifting mines were sighted by the Union Company’s cargo vessel Wairata, carrying 12 passengers, within two days’ sailing from Vancouver. According to statements by some of the crew on arrival at Auckland to-day, they read in an American paper that there were about 10,000 mines still unaccounted for between San Francisco and Honolulu.

“Apart from the two mines we sighted, which were nothing much to worry about although we altered our course to avoid the second one, it was a' nice, smooth trip, devoid of incident,” said Captain T. W. White, master of the Wairata. Some of the passengers did not share Captain White’s view. Mrs G. Chadwick, returning to Auckland from Germany, said the first mine was so close to the ship that it must have been pushed out from the bows by the displacement of water.. She could have dropped a brick on it. This mine was covered with barnacles and .was a rusty red-brown. The second mine, two days later, of. the horned variety, was also unpleasantly close. The 'sea was calm at the time.
