DEADLY PARCEL
ANOTHER MURDER ATTEMPT

A parcel containing a highly dangerous explosive in a cylinder was delivered at the home of General Sir Evelyn Barker, former commander of the British troops in Palestine who lives at Cobham, Surrey. General Barker was placed on the Stern Gang list in 1946. The parcel was posted in London and delivered in the post. It was in box form. Lady Barker became suspicious because it was unusually heavy, and she saw wires protruding from the torn wrapping. The Surrey police called in Scotland Yard and Superintendent Thomas Barratt, who had charge of the Farran bomb inquiries, and Sergeant George Baker, of the Special Branch, wen to the house. The parcel was brought to London for examination by Hour OTlce experts. The police said the P -el was "bout, one foot long and t) • m"’ e" in dimeter. The postman left it on a ledge inside the porch of General Barker’s house A servant, who came to collect the parcel, became suspicious and put the parcel in a room where it was isolated Lady Barker did not handle the parcel which was. addressed to General Barker, who was not at home.
