AMALGAMATION PLAN
TEACHERS’ ORGANISATION FURTHER DISCUSSIONS APPROVED Following a long discussion taken in committee, the annual conference of the New Zealand Technical School Teachers’ Association decided yesterday to appoint three representatives to confer with representatives of the New Zealand Educational Institute and the Secondary Schools’ Association to formulate a constitution for some form of unified body composed of members of the three constitutent organisations. At the beginning of the conference Mr J. V. Burton, vice-president of the association, told delegates of the pievious negotiations between the three bodies, and presented a report on the amalgamation scheme prepared by the secretary, Mr J. A. Orr. The principle of amalgamation as affirmed at a meeting in 1946, said Mr Bui toil, provided that in the unified body sectional interests were regarded. In 1947 the three teacher organisations discussed a report prepared by Mr G. H. Mitchell, president of the N.z.E.i., in which he outlined five steps which would lead to the creation of a com bined committee of nine to prepare a plan for unification. Three approaches were, possible, said Mr Burton. There could be complete amalgamation, which meant that the present system would be completely destroyed, or branches of the present organisations could become branenes of the new body. If a committee oi representatives was set up, it would be the continuation of the action authorised by the 1947 conference.
