EMPIRE SCHOOLS’ SHOOTING SOUTHLAND WINS SENIOR SHIELD LONDON, May 10. South Africa won the Empire schools’ rifle shooting match for the King George V Trophy with an average of 84.4 points from a possible 100. New Zealand was second with 82.5 points. Australia was third with 48.8. The results were calculated on the best 3000 cards returned from each country. Britain and India failed to gain a qualifying average. Canada did not compete. “ New Zealand is to be heartily congratulated on having won four of the Imperial trophies—the Senior Imperial Shield, the Junior Shield, the Earl Haig Sword and the Lord Milner Trophy,” states the report of the National Rifle Association on the competitions held in 1947. The senior shield was won by Southland Boys High School A Company, with a total score of 97.3. The second place was taken by Christ’s College cadets A Company, with 95.2. The junior shield was won by the Helensville District High School with 93.1 and third place was filled by Christ’s College cadets C Company The Howick District High School cadets won Earl Haig’s Sword with 93 1. In second place was the Roxburgh High School with 93. The Lord Milner Trophy was won by the Southland Boys’ High School A Company with 97.3 Helensville District High School scored 93.1. Southland Boys’ High School cadets A Comnany also won the trophy presented by Earl Jellicoe when lie was Governor-General of New Zealand.
